personality , at James King's personality is an odd one. A very odd one. Depending on the situation he can be insular or interesting. Shy or seductive. Boring or bashful. When he was young, in the aftermath of his mother's miscarriage, James tried to learn to cover up the sadness he felt. Even in his sad state he knew that his parents were suffering more than him, and they needed something to cheer them up, so James began to try and learn to cover his own sadness, disguising it with a veil of joy, hoping that it would be infectious enough to help speed his parents' recovery.

When they did indeed recover, James began to see the benefits of hiding what he really felt. So he began practicing, in front of mirrors and peers, to try and hide his emotions. And, for a wonder it worked. James now only shows what he is feeling on the surface when in the company of someone he trusts or cares for unequivocally, or when severely shaken.

However underneath this calm mask is a boy. On the surface he projects the appearance of a cool, calm guy. Someone who can get girls, someone who's smart, someone who appears able to do anything. Underneath however is the scared little boy. The one who is terrified of fire, who still remembers being afraid for his parents that night when they came home and his little sister to be did not. The one who still wants to do his parents proud, to try and inject some happiness into their lives and stop them dwelling on an unpleasant past.

boggarts , James’ biggest fear is a surprisingly mundane one: fire. Not the magical fire that one can project from their wands, that is nice and controllable. No, James fears the unpredictability of its more ordinary counterpart. Every child is told you shouldn’t play with fire. James has scars covering his upper right arm to remind him of that.

history , James King's birth, on a cool, grey evening in a little grey village in Northern Ireland. It was a surprisingly ordinary one, considering the trauma a similar event seven years later would visit on the family. Growing up James and his parents were close. Their lessons were sometimes harsh, but they were still fair to him in most things, and the three of then together were happy. They weren't a rich family, or at least, even though his mother's family, one of the pureblood families whose sons and daughters had trooped into Slytherin since time immemorial, was. But they still got along well enough, James was never hungry as a baby, never wanted for anything.

However, the traumatic events visited on the Kings when James was seven had a profound effect on the young boy. He grew determined to be a good son, no, a great son. To be excellent, to try and do as well for his parents as he could. This, along with the newly learned talent he had for veiling his emotions, shaped the man who the boy would later become.

When he was 11, he went to Hogwarts for the first time, nervous and a little frightened. But things soon perked up. While he had grown up in a wizarding household and was familiar with the trappings of magic he had never imagined such a wondrous place as Hogwarts, and soon he felt right at home. He cultivated an image with his by now well practiced talents of deception and veiling emotions. By fourth year he had a reputation as a smooth lady’s man (although some would say manwhore suited him better). This did, however, begin to distract him somewhat from his studies, his marks remained good, but they were no longer at their previous degree of excellence.

Now age 17, he is nearing the end of his time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but he still strives to do the best he can, studying hard, practicing...not to say that he doesn't have fun at all, indeed parties and girlfriends feature frequently in his life. But there is always the niggling little idea in his head, reminding him of his parents, of the sadness they once experienced, telling him to get his head down and get hard to work for his last year. And then, who knows? A part of him would like to try his hand at acting, which for someone as good at faking emotions as him should theoretically be a breeze. Or he could turn his hand to writing, like his father. For now though, the future is uncertain, and he has to get there first.
